God of the universe

I started following Jackie Hill Perry on instagram this week, and I'm telling you: If you are not following this girl, you need to. She speaks beautiful and honest truth about who God created us to be in his mighty sovereignty. Today she wrote this: "the idolatry of identity begins when we believe that the creature will give us a better name than God can."

We live our lives consumed by our image, other people's perceptions of who we are, and imprisoned by the desire to be like someone else. We allow other creatures, just like us, to dictate who we are, or what we lack. We hear those voices screaming down our ears and allow them to linger deep down our hearts, damaging profoundly the perfect image God created at the beginning.

It is as simple as this: we were created by God. The creator of the universe sat down and crafted us with his skillful hands. He knitted us together, just as we are. And he saw that it was good. His creation is still good today. The fall hasn't destroyed his original creation. The fall has broken our relationships with God and others, but not God's creation. God gave us a name, he thought through every single detail of who we are and we are still allowing creatures, a little lower than the angels, affected by the fall, to dictate who we should be, what we are missing, and how who we are is not enough.

The God of the universe, incomparable to any other creature, has given you a name. He has given me a name! There is no one else under the heavens or the earth that has a better name for me or you. Isn't it so exciting that the God of the universe sits down, looks at us and makes his face shine upon us?
